Week 7

Please post your comments relative to week 7 of teaching.

I know the TUSD two are having parent conferences this week. Here's a site with great tips: http://712educators.about.com/od/teachingstrategies/tp/parent_teacher_conference.htm?nl=1For those of you who have already had parent-teacher conferences, here's another tip:Good Phone Call Home - Why do phone calls home always have to be negative? Set this standard on its head by letting parents and guardians know how great their child is doing in your class. Most students will work really hard to get this kind of individualized recognition that will make a big difference at home. This is also a wonderful opportunity to solidify your relationship with parents. They want to know that you love their child and this is an easy way to make everyone happy. E-mails are also appreciated!!I CHALLENGE YOU TO MAKE AT LEAST ONE GOOD PHONE CALL OR E-MAIL IN EACH CLASS YOU ARE TEACHING!! (Once you have, report back here and tell us about it!!).

hello everyone!
missed you all yesterday. so mary ellen has been sick the whole week so i've been teaching all day and then had to take over parent/teacher conferences, and then because of that we had a half day today, which was very welcome!hehe. so out of my 100 something students only 8 parents showed up, and i definitely wish certain parents came. needless to say, it has been great practice, and for the classes i haven't taken over yet, it has been great practice for them to get used to me being a teacher.

so im teaching a unit to the beginning classes on prenatal care, and it's very interesting to heear the guys' reactions to the fact that they do play a role in the pregnancy process.

lauren, thanks so much for all the games. i'm totally going to use them

looking forward to seeing you all at the symposium!

Hi All!

Funny. I fixed this so people could post when Dr. Kelly came to observe but I have yet to post anything. Well here you go.

I have been teaching 3 beginning design classes since last Tuesday and it has been very rewarding yet frustrating at times. On Monday the students finished their rhythm rugs, Tuesday we worked on balance (asymmetrical, symmetrical, and radial). For balance they create green and white compositions on each balance. Wednesday and Thursday was a very active and engaging lesson. The lesson was for a block day lesson, which lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes for emphasis and the focal point in a room. First the students viewed a PowerPoint and took notes using their own graphic organizer they made themselves. The students all wrote on the starboard and circled different focal points in a room. Then there were two activities for the day. The first one was finding a magazine picture and identifying the emphasis in the room and where the focal point was as well as write a description. The second activity is the part I really liked and took a while to think about how to engage the students. Each student drew out a piece of furniture or accessory from a basket I held. The students had to close their eyes to pick their piece and could not trade or complain about what they picked because as an interior designer you may not like what your client likes. Or the client may like to keep a bookshelf in a room, which is meaningful to the client, but if you toss it out you may just lose your job right with it. After this they received a copy of a two-wall view and then needed to sketch all other furniture or make a rendition (rendition, what the designer uses and is also called sketching). The student pasted their piece somewhere on the paper and then had to make the furniture or accessory they picked the focal point in the room and create an emphasis. Well I’m sure some of you are confused because none of us have every taken interior design.

I’ve also come to learn like I’m sure Nick is learning that my biggest weakness I feel is the content in interior design because I am learning just as much as the students are.

See everyone on Saturday!

Hola! I didnt post last week but I thought that I would post about our parent teacher conferences. They went good even though we only had about 6 or 7 people come see us. The majority of them were wondering why their child was failing "cooking class". Although I can understand why they would call it that I just feel like it is almost an inslut to Bruce and I. Parents just have no idea how much goes into Culinary Arts and that it is much more then just a "cooking class". Overall there was not much a turnout from the parents. It is just sad to see that parents do not take the time to show up to things like parent teacher conferences. I guess that it is something that we have to live with and at the same time try to get more involved with the parents through email and phone calls.
Well I hope that you all enjoy your short week.
