Week three: A short week

How was Tuesday after the MLK holiday for you and your classes? Was it difficult to get people back on track or just business as usual?
What's occupying your time these days during school hours? What have you accomplished and what are you struggling with?

I feel funny about being first one every time! I want to be able to respond you guys! We have block days on Tuesday so it was easy. This week went by like a normal week! It did not feel shorter at all! My kids were not more aggressive because it was Tuesday. Thank goodness. But at the beginning of the week we had a lot of sick preschoolers. They are all back now. I’m happy about this because when I don’t see them, I miss them! Oh my gosh, my time has been occupied since I have been here. What hasn’t occupied my time is the real question? I have had the moments where I have been able to focus immensely on one thing and other times where I have to multi task. Jennifer and I get basically done with our teaching part of the day sometime before 1. Then I have time to plan and grade. I have planned my first 2 weeks of student teaching. I start taking over on Monday! I have my first week planned as an introduction project. The second week I start physical development of 6-8 year olds/ It takes me a very long time to plan a week of lessons because I perfect my lessons. I try to make sure each one of them has many components. I see each class 3 times a week for a total of 4 hours/ When I have them for an hour and a half I have a lot of time to do lectures as well as fun activities like true false chair race and taboo. I have a lot of time to visit the preschool when I’m done grading and planning. I want to get to know all the preschoolers as well as my students. The better I know the preschoolers the more my students will trust me as their teacher. The only thing I’m struggling with is having my students come to me. They are so use to going to Jennifer and now they need to come to me. They have started to ask questions but I think that eventually comes with time. I think they will come to me more when I take over. The advanced class and intermediate class comes to me with problems but they know me a lot better because I went on a fieldtrip with them. I’m really proud at what I have accomplished! I’m nervous about next week but I know Ill be ok! I work really hard on my lessons so I hope they go well! Talk to you guys soon!

Tthe beauty of spending lots of time working on your lesson plans is that you can concentrate on your students responses and reactions when you facilitate them. It helps you move quickly from worrying about how you're doing to how they are doing!!

Enjoy your first week of teaching the beginning class, Danielle! We're looking forward to hearing from you Christina!!

Ok, well Danielle I don't usually have time for anything during the week so that is why I usually do this on friday night or saturday. My time is occupied all day everyday! Like I said before my teacher teaches six fiths so she does not have a prep period. We go all day non stop from 8:30 to 3:30. Then every Tuesday after school we practice with our ccap students, on wednesdays after school we have staff meetings, on thursdays after school we have FCCLA, on Fridays after school we have ccap practice again which is at a different location every week, then on saturdays we usually have something going on with either ccap or FCCLA, all of the culinary competitions happen on saturdays not during the week! So my planning and grading has to be done at home. So danielle be greatful for those planning hours you have! Tuesday went normal the students actually thought it was monday most of the day so maybe that had something to do with it. I have already had to pull a student aside and have a talk with because of misbehavior, and I have to rearrange my seating chart for my 5th period because they are way to chatty. I have struggled with this class and keeping them on task the entire class period because there are 32 of them and it seems like all of the trouble makers were put into that class. But next week we are starting out fresh with a new seating chart I created and that should keep them inline. I must say that all the after school time has been really tough I didn't get home until about8 lastnight. The upside to me doing all of this is that I get to see the whole ccap process, and trust me it is quite a process, and I also get to meet alot of the other culinary teachers around tucson, I also saw Mountain Views' new facility and it is HUGE! It looks like a kitchen in a major restaurant, so I get to see alot of things outside of the school I am in. I think that is about it for my week, we shall see what next week brings!
Have a great weekend!

danielle- students coming to you takes time, and believe me, by the time you get to the end of the semester, they will be coming to you and not jennifer. it's just a shift for them as well, but the fact that you're taking over classes already will help them see you in that capacity, as they'll get used to you being the teacher.

christina- i can identify with your exhaustion and frustration. i didnt get nearly the amount of in school planning time as it seems cdo has, so i had my late nights too. i know it's a tough adjustment, but hang in there, it will all be worth it in the end, and you'll feel so proud when you look back at this semester and what you achieved as a teacher!

btw- danielle, i wanted to mention to you that i student taught in early childhood as well, so if you need resources let me know. christina i only have a little bit of culinary (i did a few lesssons on culinary b/c we had a kitchen/ some of the topics overlapped w/ ec.). i dont have nearly as many resources on culinary related lessons at my disposable, but have a few, so let me know if i can help in any way!

Danielle and Christina, it sounds like you are gaining lots of experience and learning from many situations. Yes, Danielle value your planning that does not happen at other schools. I did get a prep period with my teacher but it was occupied by department chair activities for CTE. I did a lot of grading and planning at home but I did do lessons ahead of time which I highly suggest.

Christina, there will be times when certain classes are chatty. Sometimes it is because of the seating chart, other times it is because the time of day. I found out the class at the end of the day or after lunch liked to talk the most.

Good luck with teaching your first class Danielle and Christina it is quite exciting!
