Have you identified any areas outside of your classroom that might effect student learning(e.g. Danielle's observation of body jumping)? Is it positive or negative? Please elaborate.
I can’t believe you used body jumping as an example! For those of you who don’t know what that is, here at CDO they don’t allow skateboards or anything like that. Therefore, the kids just jump off random things. It is really strange. I think for me I’m in my classroom and pre-school most the day but when I do get a chance to walk in the halls it is interesting. Yesterday In the halls I heard “dude that student teacher is hot.” Then I saw 2 14 year old girls kissing and other student’s talking about pot. This is in ever high school. Obviously it is distracting to the school environment but I’m hoping it won’t affect learning. These distracters have been around since the beginning of time. They are no longer positive or negative they just are. We as teachers can’t control what is happening at home or outside our 4 walls. All we can do is give the students the best education we can when they’re in our classroom. I have already experienced issues such as CPS and IVP and CTE meetings. It’s a big world so it’s nice to try and see as much as I can see. I have been to all the other CTE classes during my off time and I’m amazed at everything they have that I did not have in high school. Anyways I have to get back to work. I’m glad everyone is doing well and Lauren I can only hope they talk about me as much as they talk about you. (In a good way)
Ok well I have not seen anything as crazy as body jumping, but on Friday I went to mountain view high school to take some of our students to CCAP practice. This culinary competition is very hard and intense if the students make it to the finals they have to learn a whole new dish to cook, and if they do well in that they could be eligible to win a full ride scholarship to a major culinary arts school like johnson and whales, or the culinary institute of america. This competition and all the practices are done on their own time. We have three students going this year and it was a late firday night but I enjoyed seeing how excited they get. The teacher and I are also on our own time for this. The teachers do not get paid to practice with them. The competitions are usually on sat, so it even takes time out of the weekends. Other than that I have just noticed girls talking about their boyfriends and other girls that they can't stand to be around, you know the usual girl talk.
So Danielle tell me more about this pot thing did you tell your teacher? Isn't that something you should report to your administrator? What if they had some on campus?
I believe that talking about pot is not required to report. However, if you see it or they give you an indication that they have it with them, that's another matter. Happy MLK Day!
It was not something I felt I needed t report. It was something I just heard them talking about in passing. Kids talk about everything. It was not something I felt would in danger anyone or that they had it.
Wow, it sounds like all of you are having some interesting experiences. I remember being in High School and doing things that seemed 'cool' but as I look back were extremely immature, although body jumping is a new one, it reminds me of when "soaps" were the in trend, the shoes you could grind with. I am going to familiarize myself with the blog site, I just wanted to post a comment and get the hang of how to do it. Talk to you guys soon!
