Weeks 4 and 5: Active learning

You may have noticed that Patrick has not been on the blog lately. It seems that his school connection has blocked commenting on blogs and his home connection is down (but soon to return). Like all of you, he is busy and hasn't had the time to stop at a library to post. When I chatted with him today, he told me about a lesson he had taught earlier in the day. It featured a think-pair share and a jeopardy game on the Smartboard. Patrick can tell you his own story of how it went, but I'd like you to share what you are doing in your classes to keep up the active learning. Feel free to attach lesson plans or pictures and comment by Thursday, February 3rd.

I have been doing a lot of group work. Groups have been creating there own sets of limits for preschool, creating orders for what they would want at their own preschools, and now writing their own lesson plans with a partner that they will be teaching to the preschoolers. I think things are going well, I am building really good repoire with the "bad kids" so that is making teaching a lot easier.

hope all is well with everyone.

This week my kids totally bummed me out! We have been working on identifying garment parts, we have done flash cards and a mock magazine page. For a break I decided we would have a review session in the form of BINGO! They were less than thrilled and when I told them that we could bypass the candy and extra credit and go straight to the quiz they didn't scream NO like I expected. :( thanks a lot mean too cool high school girls!

Brandon,
What's up with the 'bad kids"? How did they earn such a label? Why do suppose you are doing so well with them? Are these the same people who
we discussed previously as defiant students?

Alissa,
You sound very frustrated with this group. Now that you have had some time to reflect, what might have been going on that you didn't see at the time? Has anything changed this week?

Hi Everyone,
I am really enjoying teaching...and I dont mean to sound all conceited but i am really proud of myself...I was really nervous about how everything was going to turn out, especially the first couple weeks. So far I feel like I have control of the class and the students that I thought would give me the most trouble are being great. I feel so accomplished.

I try to utilize many active learning techniques in the classroom since it helps the students stay focused on the task at hand.

We have already played a "Jeopardy Review" on PowerPoint where students were able to interact with the Smart Board. There were two teams, each with one student at the Smart board selecting the questions and advancing the answers, after a few questions, a new student would come up. This allowed each student to receive a turn to interact with the smart board.

For bellwork, I have also had note cards, one with a definition on it, and another with the term it is defining. Each student received one card, and they had to find which student had the corresponding definition. Students all had to get up out of their seats and find the student that completed their pair.

Being a Culinary class also allows for active learning each time they are in the kitchen cooking. They are gathering their spices or, "mise en place" and cooking. Cooking in the kitchen is by far their favorite thing to do, and the 4th period advanced class cooks nearly every day. They get upset when they have to do bookwork.

I'm happy to finally be back on the internet, sorry it took so long, but it was a series of events that was almost comical.

See you all soon!
