TEACHER TIP # 1:When 2 students demonstrate they can't work together and must move, I have them roll a big pair of red dice - lowest number has to move and tranquility is restored to the table.
Love the dice move. So, Monday I received 4 letters of rec. Two teachers, a counselor, and the librarian at Marana wrote them and they all had things to say that blew me out of the water.
One thing was consistent in the letters though-building relationships and showing respect. The librarian, who mentors a lot of the underachieving students, asked the students why they were excelling to my high standards and falling short in their other classes. The students all say similar things about how they have the desire to succeed because I have given them respect and it is their way of showing respect back to me.
I know this was a long way to say it but, my tip is just to respect the students. I watch teachers in the classrooms around me and the kids walk all over them, are disrespectful to them, and don't do any work in their class. When you watch how the teacher interacts with those students, though, its so condescending. I know this won't work in all cases and you will have you bad apples... but make it easier on yourself and just give them the respect the deserve.
This is totally off topic but I wanted to share it with you all. This morning I sat in on the most uncomfortable IEP meeting this morning where the father was unbearable to both the teachers and his daughters. He was accusing all teachers of having classroom setting that had to be in some way distracting or incompatible with his daughters. His wife never spoke and his daughter both answered his questions “yes sir, no sir.” At one point a teacher was explaining how his daughter had a 99% and was an amazing student, his response was “let’s go ahead and bring that up!” WHAT?!?! That air was very thick and everyone had to be on their guard because he was out to accuse anyone and everyone, and his daughter were both almost in tears. Crazy!

IEPs are no joke... I have been in two very similar to that where the girls also ended up in tears. It was horrible.
Yay for teaching. So, is this where we are supposed to make our last posting ever? I was expecting something epic.
